Jacob was the first soldier to receive the Medal of Honor, he earned his medal during the Great Locomotive Chase. Union soldiers attempted to destroy supply lines and railroads leading into Chattanooga but they failed and many were captured and then executed. The raiders who survived were awarded the Medal of Honor, Jacob Parrot being one of them.
