The New York Times extensively reported on another scandal threatening Espy’s political fortunes.
A quarter-century ago, federal prosecutors leveled 30 felony charges against the disgraced former Clinton appointee.
They included crimes for receiving improper gifts, adding to our last story of taking money for a scholarship. Others examples included expensive tickets to a football game.
Although a jury concluded there wasn’t sufficient evidence to find Espy accepted the gifts with criminal intent, the Office of Independent Counsel’s (OIC) investigation “revealed a pervasive pattern of improper behavior by Secretary Espy and his top aide, and by persons and companies regulated by or with business before the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).”
