Don’t let the fact that President Trump won Missouri by 19 points fool you.
Hawley faced formidable obstacles going up against a veteran politico like Clair McCaskill.
For starters, the sex scandal and felony investigation involving then-Governor Eric Greitens threatened to overshadow the Attorney General’s nascent campaign.
Fortunately, Greitens finally resigned.
A Trump endorsement coupled with McCaskill’s liberal voting record, which she couldn’t hide by rigging the GOP primary to nominate an unpalatable Republican, like Todd Akin, pushed Hawley into the lead.
And he never looked back.
On Election Day, Hawley prevailed by six points, besting a two-term Senior Senator.
A post-mortem report should give Republican operatives even more insight into how to defeat entrenched Democrats.
