Rhoades kidnapped and murdered an eight-year-boy named Michael Lyons while Lyons returned from school. Before this Rhoades had been convicted of child molestation and was out on parole. He took the boy and held him captive for 10 hours, torturing him all the while with a knife. It was later discovered through DNA evidence he may have rapped and killed another child, Julie Connell. Prosecutors described to the jurors in horrifying details of her final moments. Witnesses described Rhoades as emotionless in court when the death sentence came down.
