Calvin joined the Navy shortly after the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. The deceptively old-looking patriot was only 12-years-old when he enlisted. During a fight with the Japanese Navy, while serving aboard the USS South Dakota, shrapnel wounded the young seaman – but he still helped rescue his shipmates. He received a Purple Heart, but the Navy later revoked it upon their discovering his age.
Decades later, President Ronald Regan intervened to get it back to him as well as all the veteran benefits he never received. We thank President Reagan for this, but most importantly we – as a grateful nation – thank Calvin for his service and sacrifice.
