Bob Dole received his Purple Heart fighting in WWII on the European Front. In Italy, his 10th Mountain Division bore the brunt of German resistance in the Spring of 1945 when he took several hits from an enemy machine gun nest.
After his fellow GIs saw the extent of his injuries all they could do was give Dole a near fatal dose of Morphine to alleviate his suffering. For his catastrophic injuries, he earned a Purple Heart.
