Sounds like an excellent problem to have, right? Not really. So many politicans thought they could capitalize on the anti-Trump sentiment that divisions in the Democratic Party have grown. In California, the far-left is angry because party leaders are trying to thin the herd and exclude less electable left-wing candidates. California relies on a jungle primary, meaning the top two vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, move onto the general election. If too many Democrats run, they could and have failed to put a Democrat on the ballot – even in dark blue districts. At the very least, fractious primary battles suck resources away from the general election.
The intraparty fighting has also reopened fresh wounds from the 2016 Presidential Primary, where the DNC deliberately undermined Bernie Sanders to help the “inevitable” Hillary Clinton move onto challenging Donald Trump.
