Democrats defended slavery until the Civil War, promptly made minorities second-class citizens with Jim Crow laws after hostilities ended, and had an uncomfortably close relationship with the Ku Klux Klan. With their abysmal track record, it’s understandable you’d get the impression that they didn’t like black people; in fact, their campaign slogan in 1868 was, “This is a white man’s country: Let white men rule.” In the 20th century, President Woodrow Wilson put a fine point on that by resegregating the United States Army and federal workforce, to say nothing of the massive resistance to integration in the 1950s and 60s. Many today mistakenly hail President Lyndon Johnson for empowering black Americans with the so-called “Great Society,” but even he reportedly said, “I’ll have those n*****s voting Democratic for 200 years.” All of these Democratic policies hurt black people.
