Rosemary Kennedy, sister of future-President John Kennedy, and Senators Robert and Ted was an enigma to her father, who wanted all his children to be sex-crazed, cold-blooded killers.
Ultimately, Rosemary’s rebellious behavior and lower academic and athletic ability (relative to her siblings) proved too much. Now that Joe Sr. had more time on his hands after losing his coveted ambassadorship, he could read into experimental surgeries to make her compliant.
Rosemary’s prefrontal lobotomy in 1941, one of the first performed, failed spectacularly. She spent the rest of her life in a vegetative state with minimal family contact before passing away in 2005 at 86.
