A dangerous illegal immigrant meth dealer was given bail by an Oregon court—but now, federal immigrants officials are holding him accountable.

Jose Alfredo Bustos-Bustos, 30, was leaving his third appointment at a Portland courthouse, when he was finally detained by the feds.
On Friday, he was ordered him to remain in custody until his trial—after U.S. Magistrate Judge Stacie B. Beckerman found that Bustos-Bustos was a danger to the community, and a flight risk.

Given the gravity of the charges Bustos-Bustos faces, it raises eyebrows that he was even given bail in the first place, even forgetting his illegal status. Bustos-Bustos is charged with illegal possession of a firearm, and possession of methamphetamine with an attempt to distribute.
Bustos-Bustos has asked to be held at the Northwest Re-Entry Center, while he awaits trial, so he can continue to see his wife and kids. Bustos-Bustos’s wife is a U.S. citizen, and he’s attempting to gain legal residency through her.

Police first caught Bustos-Bustos on January 24, when they pulled over his Dodge Avenger. His wife was driving, he was the passenger, and their two kids, age 2 and 4, were in the backseat. Also in the car were 200 grams of methamphetamine and thousands of dollars in cash.

A warrant to search the family’s apartment uncovered a whopping 1,166 grams of methamphetamine, and nine firearms scattered throughout the apartment. One of the guns, an AR-15, has a small child’s fingerprint—and police suspect that it may have been handled by Bustos-Bustos’s four-year-old.

However, despite the arrest—and despite the fact that Bustos-Bustos had checked into court multiple times for his hearings—federal officials didn’t know of Bustos-Bustos’s illegal status until the end of March, when a computer check revealed there was already an outstanding deportation order on the suspected meth dealer.

Bustos-Bustos’s wife, Miriam Avila, 25, also faces possession of methamphetamine charges, but because she’s a U.S. citizen, remains out on bail as she awaits trial.
