A teenage illegal immigrant—one of the so-called “DREAMers” who came to the United States as a child—has been arrested: after a hit-and-run in Syracuse, New York, that left a toddler dead, and her family members injured.

Felix Santos, 18, was caught in Fayetteville, North Carolina, after nearly two months on the lam. U.S. Marshals returned him to authorities in Syracuse, and he’s now being held at the Onandaga County Justice Center.

On May 27, Santos was driving a car. He jumped the curb, and struck two children who were playing on the sidewalk with sidewalk chalk, as their father watched them.

Two-year-old Jameisha Stanford died in the hospital shortly after from injuries sustained in the accident. Her father, James, 26, and her one-year-old brother, James Jr., were injured but survived.

In a recent Facebook post on his page after his arrested, Santos seemed to apologize for his actions:

“I know I was wrong for leaving the scene but I am a young guy,” stated the post. “I was very scared and didn’t know what to do at the moment. I was scared and confused, I never been in a situation like this.”

Because Santos in jail without access to the internet, it’s not completely clear if he dictated the message himself or who posted the message.
Santos has been charged with manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
