Motel 6 is helping Immigrations and Customs Enforcement track down illegal immigrants, according to a new report from the Phoenix New Times.
The two locations, which are both corporate-owned, sent their guest lists to ICE agents “every morning.” The company might be receiving as much as $200 each time an illegal immigrant gets caught in a sting.
Managers at both locations directed reporters to the corporate hotline, but employees, who didn’t supply their names, were quick to explain that turning over their guest registry to the feds was common practice.
“We send a report every morning to ICE — all the names of everybody that comes in,” said one of the motel’s front desk clerks. “Every morning at about 5 o’clock, we do the audit, and we push a button, and it sends it to ICE.”
Yasmeen Pitts O’Keefe, a spokesperson for ICE’s Phoenix division, wouldn’t confirm or deny if her unit was receiving tips from Motel 6.
“I wouldn’t be able to confirm how we are getting our information. Those are investigative techniques that we wouldn’t be able to talk about,” O’Keefe said.
“If hypothetically we were somewhere — if we did administratively arrest some folks — that happens all the time. We conduct targeted enforcement operations every day.”
Phoenix Police didn’t confirm whether or not the two Motel 6 locations were giving up information, but did admit that, “on occasion and through informal contacts, various hotels and motels have shared their guest lists with officers.”
ICE has arrested at least 20 illegal immigrants, thanks to the information supplied by Motel 6.
