Richard Plotts, a violent criminal, emptied his chamber at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, killing the caseworker beside him and grazing his psychiatrist, Dr. Lee Silverman in a July 2014 incident. The “gun-free” zone shootout abruptly ended after Silverman took out his pistol and shot Plotts. District Attorney Jack Whelan later said in a press conference had Silverman been unarmed, he – and other innocent bystanders – would have almost certainly perished.
