Controversial former NFL quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, is GQ Magazine’s “Citizen of the Year” – for helping spur anti-National Anthem protests at football games.
“Much has changed in the four years since Colin Kaepernick was last on the cover of GQ. Back then he was a rippling superhero of a quarterback on the rise. But a simple act – kneeling during the national anthem – changed everything,” the men’s fashion magazine explained.
“It cost him his job. It also transformed Colin Kaepernick into a lightning rod and a powerful symbol of activism and resistance,” they added.
Kaepernick began kneeling during the National Anthem last season to protest racial inequality and police brutality. His contract was not renewed by the San Francisco 49ers this season.
But his protests spread through the National Football League – and entered the political arena after President Donald Trump denounced them.
The NFL has seen TV ratings and ticket sales plummet, primarily due to the protests and the negative attention it receives (RELATED: Anthem Protests Cost NFL’s Official Sponsor $70M). The NFL’s favorability numbers have also collapsed, making it now the most disliked professional sport in America (RELATED: Hall Of Fame Announcer Says He’ll NEVER Watch Another Game).
Kaepernick, who claims he’s “honored” by the GQ title, remains a free agent, yet to be signed by another team.
