Megyn Kelly is no stranger to uncomfortable moments, most of which have more to do with her own struggling TV show than any intentionally contrived sense of discomfort (RELATED: BREAKING: YOOJ News In Trump-Megyn Kelly Feud). There was that time the signal awkwardly cut out mid-interview, leaving Kelly to repeat the phrase “Is this safe?” to no one. There was that other time she abruptly cut off a gun control debate by saying “Gotta leave it at that, Tom.” Then there was all of that drama surrounding Kelly’s Will & Grace interview and the show’s will-they, won’t-they relationship with getting political. Basically, Megyn Kelly Today has been a mess from its first episode, and nothing changed when Kelly brought on one of her biggest guests to date — Joe Biden.
Most of Kelly’s interview with Biden was surprisingly sweet. The former vice president spoke about his upcoming book, teared up at the mention of his late son, complimented Melania Trump, and gave some thoughtful insights about the direction of America and the Democratic party. Kelly’s show and the later Today Showeven left time for Biden to answer a few audience questions. However, once Hillary Clinton‘s name came up, the interview went a bit south.
The daytime host started her segment about Biden’s potential political aspirations by running down a checklist of every reason why he shouldn’t be president. He agreed with all of her criticisms — that he was too old and should only serve for one term — save for the allegation that rustbelt workers love Donald Trump more than Biden. “I understand the rustbelt. Donald Trump has no notion of what those people are going through,” he said. “It’s not a criticism. It’s an observation.” So yeah. Things started off on a tense note.
After some more talk about how much Biden understands middle class America, Kelly said “Hillary Clinton has been criticized for not having a clear message on that. I wanna ask you though because — ”
