Charles Manson, the legendary 1960s serial killer, has died in prison. He was 83.

Manson formed the infamous Manson Family cult responsible for the brutal Tate-LaBianca murders in the summer of 1969, which shook the nation.

The carnage began on August 9, when four members of the so-called Family broke into the house of actress Sharon Tate, who was married to Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski. Tate, who was eight and a half months’ pregnant, was brutally slain, along with four friends staying in the Beverly Hills mansion and the gardener’s son.

The next day, the cult – including Manson himself – stabbed wealthy supermarket executive Leno LaBianca and his wife to death in their nearby home.

Both crime scenes were particularly gruesome, with 169 stab wounds and seven gunshot wounds. At Tate’s estate the word “Pig,” was scrawled in the victims’ blood. LaBianca had the word “War” carved out of his torso.

Manson intended to start a race war and hoped the Black Panthers would be held responsible.

Although initially sentenced to death, the Supreme Court briefly abolished the death penalty in the 1970s, so Manson instead served life in prison with the possibility of parole. Something he would never receive.
