Miss Iraq, Sarah Idan, and her family had to flee their country – after the beauty queen engaged in some selfie diplomacy with Miss Israel.
Idan posted a photo on her Instagram account of her posing with Miss Israel, Adar Gandelsman, at the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas. She captioned the picture, “Peace and Love from Miss Iraq and Miss Israel.”
Idan also came under fire for modeling in a bikini at the pageant.
Idan was forced to apologize to those who thought the photo was “harmful” to the plight of the Palestinians. She added that it was not a political statement but, rather, to “express hope and desire for peace between the two countries.”
She was also quick to clarify that her post “does not signal support for the government of Israel and does not mean I agree or accept its policies in the Arab homeland.
Despite the clarification, however, Idan has refused to remove the original photo. After receiving death threats, Idan and her family members have reportedly left Iraq.
