Steve Bannon is partnering with a shady Chinese billionaire to build his political and media ambitions, according to sources.
Bannon, who runs conservative news site Breitbart, fell into hot water with Trump and much of the political right after making incendiary comments about the president and his administration. Bannon had previously served as Trump’s advisor.
As a result of his attacks on the White House, Bannon lost his biggest financial backer, conservative billionaire Rebekah Mercer, who announced she would no longer be helping fund Breitbart.
After losing Mercer’s support, Bannon apparently found solace in Chinese real estate billionaire, Guo Wengui. Guo, who has sparred with the media in China, is currently wanted in his homeland on corruption charges. Guo had deep ties to the now-disgraced former head of China’s spy agency, for example, which he allegedly exploited to further his business interests.
Bannon and Guo’s relationship raises eyebrows not just because of Guo’s past but because of Bannon’s anti-globalization stances.
It’s not clear how deep Bannon and Guo’s relationship goes, or what they have planned for the future – but, given his recent falling out with President Trump, it could have a major impact moving forward.
