A co-founder of the Palestinian terror group Hamas died this week, after accidentally shooting himself in the face.

According to a Hamas spokesperson, Imad al-Alami, 62, was apparently “examining his personal weapon” at home on January 9, when it accidentally went off. A bullet struck him in the face.

Paramedics rushed Al-Alami to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. Despite being in intensive care for three weeks, he passed away on Tuesday.

Hamas officials had initially denied the accident, claiming that al-Alami had died of natural causes – but, after growing suspicion about the accuracy of their claims, they grudgingly admitted what had happened.

Al-Alami had been one of the founders of Hamas, back in 1987. The political wing of Hamas has been the de facto ruler of the Palestinian Gaza Strip since 2007. Al-Alami had held several top posts in Hamas, but despite remaining a top-ranked official, did not have a political role in the organization at the time of his death.
