A Hill-HarrisX poll found that 32% of African American males would choose Donald Trump over a generic Democrat in next fall’s presidential election.

Although The Hill spun the poll by saying an overwhelming majority of black voters oppose Trump, the 32% figure represents near historic highs for GOP presidential candidates in the modern political era.

Moreover, Trump received a meager 13 percent of the vote from black males in 2016.

The same poll showed 7% of African American females would vote for Trump. However, even that number is up from 4% in 2016, according to CNN’s exit polls.

The relatively high support from African Americans for Trump may stem from the passage of the First Step Act, a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill aiming to alleviate systemic biases in our justice system.

Trump also has high-profile friendships with famous African Americans, including Kayne West and Jim Brown.
