New information reveals that Johnson was on the FBI’s radar for over a year, as an ISIS sympathizer, but the Bureau failed to act, even as authorities discussed filing federal criminal charges.
According to the local Palm Bech Post, the FBI stepped aside because Johnson was a juvenile:
“In January 2017, several local law-enforcement agencies and the FBI came together with the staff at William T. Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens, where he was a student at the time,” wrote the Palm Beach Post. “The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office received information Johnson supported the terrorist organization ISIS and had reached out to the group online, expressing his desire to join them. A detective with the sheriff’s office interviewed Johnson for a mental-health assessment and said the teen sympathized with terrorist organizations, the report said.”
The Post added, “Initially, the FBI did not want to charge Johnson because he was a juvenile and ‘believed a redirection approach would be the most beneficial regarding his conduct.'”
By February of this year, the Post reported that the FBI “said they had all the evidence they needed” but still did nothing, even as local police prodded them to see “where they were with federal charges.”
It’s another black eye for the FBI. One month ago, reports showed the suspect from the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, was also brought to the FBI’s attention twice and overlooked by investigators.
Johnson faces one charge of murder and two charges of attempted murder, for stabbing another 13-year-old boy and his mother, who tried to stop the attack. He remains in police custody, having admitted to the vicious attacks.
