During MSNBC’s coverage of the shooting at YouTube headquarters, Nicole Wallace confused the opening of a soda can on the set for additional gunshots.

According to Grabien News, Wallace, an anti-Trump Republican, was lamenting how difficult it was to pass gun control after school shootings. She was tying it to her time in the Bush administration during the 9/11 attacks.

“Steve Schmidt, I always go back to the horror of 9/11 and the complete reliance, you know, we’re in our tribes, we’re in our corners most of our lives,” Wallace was saying when someone opened a can of soda either on set or in the control room.

“I think we just heard some gunshots. Should we listen to that for a second, control room? Not gunshots? Okay. They’ll tell us if there’s something we need to dip in and listen to.”

The incident brought mockery of Wallace on social media.

Tucker Carlson got in on the act on his Fox News show. He called Wallace “MSNBC’s resident genius” and warned his viewers to “listen very carefully as she lectures you on the Second Amendment because she knows a lot about it.”

This story is merely the latest and most hilarious example of the media failing to demonstrate even a basic knowledge of guns. As someone who has both shot guns and opened soda cans, this reporter can say there is a substantial difference in the sound both make.
