Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty just announced he’s running for his old job

Pawlenty announced in an online video. Before his latest bid, he served two terms in the governor’s mansion in St. Paul.

Democrat Mark Dayton has held the office for the past seven years and is not running for re-election.

Pawlenty was a contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012 before entering the private sector.

His entrance immediately puts Minnesota, a traditionally blue state in play, despite the headwinds historically facing the party in power during the Midterms.

Donald Trump narrowly lost the Land of 10,000 Lakes by a razor-thin margin of 1.9 percent. Four of the state’s eight congressional districts (three held by Democrats) are competitive. Having a popular ex-governor at the top of the ticket should pay dividends down ballot as well.
