Less than an hour after polls closed, the newly-elected mayor of Sharpsburg, North Carolina, Robert Williams Jr. found himself in jail.
Sharpsburg Police received a complaint from a concerned citizen that the mayor-elect appeared intoxicated before getting into his car at an undisclosed polling place and speeding off.
A sheriff’s cruiser got behind Williams’ vehicle and promptly watch him veer off the road and crash near City Hall.
The mayor was unceremoniously booked into the Nash County Detention Center on a litany of charges: DWI (with a blood alcohol content nearly twice the legal limit), multiple traffic infractions, possession of a concealed firearm, and resisting an officer – among others.
Williams bonded out of jail and is not responding to media inquiries. His court date is scheduled for June 5.
The second-time candidate won his race over the incumbent, Mayor Randy Weaver, by seven votes.
