Miami-Dade Police responded in force at 1:30 am this morning in response to reports of an active shooter at Trump National Doral, the golf and spa resort owned by the president in South Florida.
Police exchanged fire with a local man, 42-year-old Jonathan Oddi. Officers disabled the gunman with multiple shots to his legs.
Here’s what we know so far:
1.) This was an Apparent Police Ambush
Police had been alerted to shots fired and a man “spewing” rhetoric against President Trump in the hotel lobby. From how the crime unfolded and evidence collected at the scene, it’s apparent this was an attempt to lure officers into the lobby. Five officers were wounded, including one who broke their wrist.
2.) The Shooter’s Murky Past
According to his LikedIn profile, Oddi owns a business, Pegasus Minerals and Gemstones, in the Miami metropolitan area as well as Tucson, Arizona. He has volunteered as Santa Claus at Miami Children’s Hospital. He previously was involved in selling HDTVs to restaurant and hotels.
Oddi lives in an apartment complex nearby, divorced in 2014 and according to The Miami New Times has “lawsuits or criminal charges in Miami-Dade.”
His collection of odd jobs and varying descriptions for his current work on different sites paints a murky picture.
3.) Oddi is in Stable Condition
Despite being shot multiple times in the legs, Oddi remained conscious and is reportedly in stable condition at a Miami hospital. This may be a testament to his health. Besides his odd jobs, Oddi refers to himself as a “fitness consultant.”
4.) Secret Service Says ‘No Protectees’ Were in Danger
Secret Service agents confirmed that neither President Trump, his family, or any other VIPs were in the vicinity of the golf club at the time of the shooting. Consequently, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office have taken the lead in the investigation. The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are providing additional resources as needed.
Officials are not calling the incident an act of terrorism.
