California is weighing a plan to become the first state in the country to offer free healthcare coverage to illegal immigrants.
Orange County Supervisor Michelle Steel, who represents the traditionally Republican coastal country in Southern California, slammed the plan.
“It’s going to be a utopia for illegal immigrants,” warned Steel during an interview on Fox Business, claiming that such a giveaway would result in a wave of illegal immigrants from both other states and other countries.
“You’re getting welfare benefits, you have free healthcare coverage, and then you can hide because government itself is protecting these people even [if] they commit crimes,” she added.
Steel also attacked the cost of the plan — which is predicted to be more than $3 billion in the 2018-2019 budget year alone, according to the state’s Legislative Analyst’s Office. Steel claimed that the actual total could be a lot more.
“When they say it’s $3 billion, you don’t know how much it’s going to cost,” Steel added. “We’re talking about 1.2 million people.”
Billions of dollars in added expenses, especially for a giveaway to illegal immigrants, would add to the state’s $1.5 trillion debt — something that Steel finds unacceptable.
“How are you going to add more money for health care coverage for illegals?” she asked. “I mean this is almost like obnoxious.”
The plan might have a chance of passing in deeply-liberal California, where Democrats hold the state legislature and the governor’s mansion. But it could cause a massive backlash that could help revitalize the shattered state Republican Party.
“It would give Republicans relevance in California they would never have before,” predicted David McCuan, a political analyst and political science professor at Sonoma State University. McCuan predicted that Republicans could see a swelling of support over the proposal, which could also attract many of the states millions of unaffiliated voters.
