British Prime Minister, and glorified Churchill flunkey, Anthony Eden was upset at Britain’s diminishing role on the world stage and a snub by Egypt’s nationalist President, so in 1957 he planned a war with France and Israel against Soviet-backed Egypt to re-occupy the Suez Canal – without telling the United States anything. The British and their allies quickly seized their objectives but retreating Egyptian forces made the canal inoperable for months. President Eisenhower successfully led an effort to diffuse the situation, but the British brought the world to the brink of nuclear war.
