A man was trying to burn an American flag blanket in rural Washington state as a protest – but instead wound up sparking a massive wildfire.
The raging inferno burned a total of five acres before Ephrata County firefighters contained it at around 6 pm.
The Grant County Fire District, which assisted Ephrata in putting out the fire, took to Facebook to criticize the protester and promote fire safety.
“We assisted [Ephrata firefighters] yesterday about 6 pm near the airport for a 5-acre fire,” they wrote, “The fire ignited after a man tried to burn an American flag blanket which then spread to wildland. Four units from GCFD 13 assisted EFD in containing the fire, and no structures were damaged. No matter your political views, we think it’s safe to say we can all agree starting a wildfire is no good!
The Grant County Fire District also added that “Ephrata Police are investigating.”
Authorities have not released the man’s identity.
