Samantha Bee, the liberal host of the TBS network’s late night “Full Frontal” program, whipped up a firestorm Wednesday with a monologue in which she referred to Ivanka Trump as a “c*nt” over the Trump administration’s immigration policies regarding children.
But it’s Bee, not Trump, who wants to segregate children based on race.
Using a photograph of Trump hugging her baby daughter to attack the immigration policies of her father, President Donald Trump, Bee sneered:
“You know, Ivanka, that’s a beautiful photo of you and your child, but let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices, you feckless c*nt. He listens to you. Put on something tight and low-cut and tell your father to fucking stop it.”
But Bee, referring to debunked media reports that Trump was keeping immigrant children in holding pens, would know something about targeting non-white children.
Bee is leading an effort to stop New York City officials from placing black and Hispanic children in her kids’ wealthy, overwhelmingly white school.
Slate reports:
“Like so many public schools in New York City, P.S. 452 has a lopsided enrollment, with a population that’s three-quarters white and Asian, with only 13 percent of kids qualifying for free lunch, in a district that’s 43 percent white and Asian and 48 percent low-income, according to a Chalkbeat story on the brewing controversy.
P.S. 452, which opened in 2010 to relieve overcrowding in other nearby sought-after schools, quickly became overcrowded itself. And so the city proposed moving the school, which currently shares a building with two other schools, 16 blocks south, to a site with more space that happens to be just adjacent to large housing projects. In one swoop, the city could solve the school’s capacity problem while improving its diversity.
But of course, in an as-if-scripted repetition of the integration fights that have gone down since the birth of busing, many current P.S. 452 parents are up in arms against the proposal. After all, didn’t they buy their expensive Upper West Side domiciles precisely for the right to attend this fabulously high-performing school? That, at least, is the argument getting the most airtime.
Among those leading the “keep it white” fight are Bee and her husband, fellow TV comic Jason Jones. Jones and fellow parents insist that the real problem is walking 16 blocks to a new school, and not the fact their rich white kids would be seen in the same school as poor blacks and Hispanics.
They insist that having to travel the added distance would mean having to hire full-time babysitter, despite the fact the new school would be only 4,244 feet away. The only real difference would be the presence of non-white kids.
“To portray any opposition as classist or racist is as bad as it can get,” said Jones, trying to deflect charges of racism.
Jones then told fellow integration opponents to not speak to the media.
That’s because other liberals aren’t buying Bee’s and Jones’ claims.
Slate slammed the privileged liberals like Bee, writing “So what’s going to happen? If precedent is any guide, the well-organized—and well-heeled—parents of P.S. 452 will likely win the day. Last year, a similar drama went down in the neighborhood when the city proposed changing the attendance zones so that some of the kids at the overcrowded (and also mostly white and middle-class) P.S. 199 would be reassigned to the under-enrolled (and also mostly minority and poor) P.S. 191.”
“It is a shameful fact that New York City, the most diverse metropolis in the nation, has by some measures its most segregated public school system. Thanks to stratified housing patterns and in some cases furthered by outdated school catchment areas, students cluster by income level and by race,” reads a New York Daily News editorial.
“Thanks to years of resistance on both sides of the divide, and a lack of courage from the city’s Department of Education, integration efforts have been relegated to the back burner, with the burner set below simmer. Which is why a rezoning plan for Manhattan’s Upper West Side deserves praise,” reads the editorial, titled “Not separate, and equal: Ending odious school segregation in New York City.”
