Archie Parnell, a tax lawyer who ran a surprisingly competitive campaign for South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District in 2017, saw his political fortunes plummet once news broke that he violently attacked his wife according to records from his 1974 divorce. The abuse was reportedly so vicious that it led to his ex-wife telling authorities she feared for her life.
In spite of the revelations, nearly 60 percent of Democrats in SC-05 voted for Parnell in the primary. Republican primary goers would face withering criticism for supporting a verified wife-beater over three other candidates.
Parnell is running for the seat once held by current White House OMB Director Mick Mulvaney, a moderately Republican district. This probably isn’t the Democrats’ best chance for an upset in 2018.
