Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez not only defeated New York Democrat Congressman Joe Crowley last month, she may have ended Nancy Pelosi’s reign as House Democrat leader.
Crowley, speaking to CBS’ “Face The Nation” declined to offer Pelosi his support for Speaker should Democrats retake the majority in November, and warned factions within the party.
The Washington Examiner reports:
Rep. Joe Crowley, D-N.Y., on Sunday stopped short of offering an endorsement of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for speaker should Democrats take back the majority in the lower chamber with the 2018 midterm elections.
“If we win the House back, Nancy will have a very strong case for holding on to the speakership,” Crowley said during an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “If not, there may be other issues that come to the fore at that point. But it’s up to the next Congress, Democratic Caucus to decide that fate.”…
…Pelosi’s position could be under threat as Democratic congressional candidates facing tough election bids distance themselves from her in the wake of Republican attack ads seeking to undermine her credibility.
If Democrats were to retake the House, they would do so by electing dozens of centrists in districts with marginal Republican support – precisely the kind who want to maintain an image of political independence by voting against the unpopular and entrenched Pelosi.
But Pelosi also faces opposition from the far-left fringes of her party, who saw her as unwilling to push radical legislation at a time between 2009 and 2010 when Democrats held the House, Senate and White House. Many want a more aggressively liberal party leader, and one not seen as connected to the Hillary Clinton-era Democrat Party.
Pelosi is one of Congress’ most effective campaigners, but can she maintain power facing challenges from both sides of her own party?
