Authorities arrested a Florida woman named Deisy Penton de Cabrera in 2012 after being found with numerous ballots that didn’t belong to her. The ballots she had belonged to elderly people, most of whom were blind, deaf, or had Alzheimer’s.
The Hialeah native pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor counts of violating a county ordinance for possessing more than two ballots belonging to other voters.
Prosecutors dropped an additional felony charge.
Detectives nabbed Cabrera filling out a ballot for an elderly woman unresponsive with a brain tumor.
Hialeah comprises Florida’s 27th District. Despite Hillary Clinton winning it by 20 points, the highest margin of any Republican-held district, popular newscaster Maria Elvira Salazar has given Democrat Donna Shalala a run for her money. RealClearPolitics puts the race in its Toss-Up column.
Prognosticators expect Florida’s gubernatorial and Senate elections will be highly competitive, too.
