A black Republican working to reelect Congressman David Young (R-IA) in West Des Moines said a police officer arrested him while door knocking, a form of direct voter contact protected by the First Amendment.

The officer had allegedly responded to a call about a “suspicious person.”

The canvasser, Keilon Hill, believes the officer used that as an excuse for racial profiling.

Young lost reelection in the Des Moines-based district to Democrat Cindy Axne by 1.5 percentage points.
