During WWII, Hawkins and his company were pinned down by machine gun fire coming from several gunner nests. He moved quickly and took down six machine gun nests despite being wounded by shrapnel during the landing. When he was out of ammo he began throwing grenades and explosive charges in the nests. While raiding a seventh nest he was shot in the chest by a Japanese soldier. He would go on to refuse medical treatment and continued his assault on the machine gun nests. He would finally fall while taking down the eighth nest. For his bravery on the battlefield his family was presented the Medal of Honor.
