The presidential election is less than a year away. Democrat and Republican voters will go to the polls in Iowa in early February. It’s tough to predict who will be the nominees in either party, but there’s already a clear loser this cycle and it’s limited government.

Let’s start with the depressing GOP presidential race. Current GOP frontrunner Donald Trump has suggested banning Muslim immigration and has suggested that he would govern as a Third World strongman. Ben Carson wants to cut funding for universities who show “extreme political bias.”Meanwhile, Ted Cruz wants to cut off funding for any universities who boycott Israel. Finally the supposedly “sane” candidate, Marco Rubio, believes “nothing matters if we’re not safe” and wants to close anything that could “lead to radicalization.” That’s just the top four! The rest of the field has called for various other anti-freedom schemes. Even the alleged libertarian in the race, Rand Paul, has floated a near ban on Muslim entry into the U.S.

Meanwhile if you’re expecting Democrats to take up the charge for limited government, you’re sure to be disappointed by the party of “safe spaces.” Bernie Sanders is running as a self-described “democratic socialist.” Hillary Clinton is proposing the usual mixture of higher taxes, more spending, and more regulation. Martin O’Malley seems to consider the NRA a bigger enemy to the United States than ISIS.

The only conclusion to the insanity of the 2016 presidential election is that freedom is just simply not that popular. Sure, Americans love freedom in the abstract, but when it comes down to making hard choices the American people love them some big government. Polls have always shown that the American people love everything from Social Security to government funded K-12 education. However, when it comes time to pay taxes for it the American people balk. It’s why Democrats are selling to the American people that a bunch of rich people can pay for everything, while Republicans are promising to cut taxes and keep spending money on everything.

In this age of terrorism, Americans are very frightened. Once again, they’re turning to the government to protect them. In exchange for that protection, the American people are willing to give up their civil liberties. Democrats pledge to take away the gun rights of many Americans and ban certain types of weapons. Republicans are promising to go through private phone data and restrict travel to keep America safe.

What good does it do to fight ISIS if we lose our freedom here at home? How can we be prosperous if our country is broke? Somebody will take the oath of office on January 20, 2017 but the country and the ideal of limited government may end up the big loser.
