Whenever the Obama Administration tries to talk its way out of a total national security failure that costs American lives, Trey Gowdy is there to stop them. This week was no different:

Rep. Trey Gowdy on Thursday rejected arguments from the Obama administration that no warning signs were missed when it gave Tashfeen Malik a visa to enter the United States, and participate in a shooting that killed 14 people in California.

At an oversight hearing of the U.S. visa system, Gowdy said “it’s one thing” for DHS to admit that screeners missed signs of Malik’s radicalization before allowing her to move to the U.S. on a fiancee visa.

“It’s another thing to argue that we missed nothing,” he added.

“There was nothing in the system that we used that would pick that up,” replied Alan Bersin, assistant secretary for international affairs at DHS.

“That doesn’t make me feel any better,” Gowdy said. “There was nothing in her background that this administration says we missed … and yet there’s still 14 dead people.”

Gowdy noted the argument that the government missed nothing in the vetting process used on Malik suggests the system is inadequate, not that it is working as intended, as federal officials have insisted.

“I just listened to Ben Rhodes give a series of words like ‘extensive,’ ‘thorough,’ ‘careful,'” Gowdy said, referring to a top White House security adviser. “And I just sat here and thought, ‘Well, if all of that was true, how did we miss the lady in San Bernardino?'”

We can’t take back the tragedy that happened in San Bernardino, but thank God we have good men like Trey Gowdy to hold those who fail to protect Americans accountable.
