Many in the establishment, particularly the Rubio camp, are anxious for candidates to start dropping out, understanding that dollars and votes and percentage points are being wasted on candidates with no future.
Today, a poll came out suggesting it doesn’t really matter. In a three man race between Trump, Rubio, and Cruz, the Donald reigns:
Donald Trump still leads even when the Republican presidential field is cut to the top three candidates, according to the latest YouGov poll.
The national poll of likely Republican primary voters found that winnowing the field down to Trump, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio did not put either of the two remaining challengers ahead of the outspoken real estate developer. Here’s what a three-way race would look like:
Donald Trump: 45 percent
Ted Cruz: 30 percent
Marco Rubio: 21 percent
Obviously, a lot of factors would change. Presumably, talent and capital would flow Rubio and Cruz and give them resources to rival Trump. Still, the gap is so wide right now as to suggest that the establishment might have to get use to saying the phrase “President Trump.”
