John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States, recieved an alligator as a gift from French General Marquis de Lafayette. Adams lodged the alligator in the East Room of the White House, where he would take various guests to view the animal, finding humor in the fact that his guests did not believe he was actually housing an alligator.
