Never let a crisis go to waste. That, at least, seems to be the stance of Hillary Clinton’s campaign when it comes to another shooting of an unarmed black teenager.
New leaked emails show that Hillary Clinton’s team debated which deaths to exploit, in their crusade against gun violence, while brainstorming ideas for an anti-gun op-ed that Hillary was writing for Marie Claire magazine.
One aide, Corey Ciorciari, suggested exploiting the killing of Jordan Davis, a 17-year-old black male. His death was picked because “Jordan’s mom is one of the leading gun violence proponents in the country,” according to Ciorciari.
The recipient of Ciorciari’s email, another Hillary aide named De’Ara Balenger, replied: “This is great.”
Davis had been by a white man at a Jacksonville gas station, in November 2012. Davis and his friends had been blasting music from their car, and a verbal argument ensued—resulting in Davis’s death. Michael David Dunn, 47, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison with no change of parole.
Unlike some of the cases that groups like Black Lives Matter have brought to national attention, Davis’s death was cold-blooded murder—and his attacker was brought to justice.
But Davis’s death is also a tragedy for his family, friends, and loved ones—one that should not be exploited for political gain by a presidential candidate set on stripping away the Second Amendment.
