Writing at the Daily Caller, the great Ted Goodman notes that Donald Trump is making a hard pitch for deep blue Michigan:
Republican nominee Donald Trump campaigned in Michigan Monday, a state where he is narrowing the gap with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, according to recent polls.
Speaking in Grand Rapids in the early afternoon, Trump focused on jobs and the economy, promising Michigan voters that he would bring back manufacturing jobs.
“Michigan has lost one in four manufacturing jobs since Bill Clinton signed NAFTA,” Trump said.
“Before NAFTA, there were 280,000 auto jobs in Michigan, and now there is 160,000 and its going down fast. We have nearly $800 billion in trade deficits with the rest of the world,” he continued.
Michigan has 16 electoral votes. A Republican has not captured the Michigan since 1988, when George H.W. Bush won 53 percent of the popular vote against a hapless Michael Dukakis. Real Clear Politics average of Michigan polls sits at Clinton + 7.7, but Team Trump has declared the state up for grabs, and Trump adviser Jason Miller says that internal polling has the state in a “dead heat.”
So which is true? Clinton’s lead appears steady, but if the Trump campaign is what it advertises itself to be- a movement of disaffected Americans showing up for the first time in years because they’re sick and tired of the globalist, corporatist policies that rob ordinary Americans of dignity and opportunity, then a win in Michigan would likely indicate a groundswell of support that’s leads to a Trump victory.
Goodman’s piece is worth a read. If you’re on the ground in Michigan, let us know what you’re seeing in the comments.
