Then-Democratic presidential candidate Grover Cleveland admitted to fathering a child out of wedlock during the 1884 presidential election. Cleveland sent the boy to an orphanage and committed the mother to a mental institution, tarnishing his image as “Grover the Good.”

Ultimately, Cleveland won the presidency by a hair’s breadth.
