Many conservatives were puzzled by Jim Webb’s presence on the Democratic stage, as he made common sense arguments for the Second Amendment, touted his bona fides as a Vietnam veteran, and discussed an “all options” energy policy. Webb’s policies echoed those of blue collar Democrats of yesteryear, and were a far cry from those of admitted socialist Bernie Sanders. Many thought he should be on the Republican debate stage. With that in mind, Webb made a move that could have a major impact on this election:

Democratic presidential candidate Jim Webb is now considering running for the White House as an independent, his campaign said Monday.

The former Virginia senator, whose centrist views contrast with the liberal stances of primary opponents Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders , plans to discuss his future plans at a Tuesday news conference in Washington.

According to a press release, Webb will “discuss his candidacy, the campaign and his views of the political parties in the current election cycle.”

Webb’s policy preferences are somewhat similar to Donald Trump’s. They differ greatly on immigration, but the Republican base and anti-establishment independents might be willing to overlook that in light of Webb’s sterling record of military service and stated commitment to protect the nation.

Trump should be worried. Webbmentum might drive hardcore trup supporters from the primary booth, narrowing the gap between the Donald and Ben Carson, or even establishment favorite Marco Rubio.

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton should be celebrating. It’s clear from the tone of the Democratic debate, and his poll numbers so far, that Webb has limited support in the modern Democratic party. But Webb’s likely supporters are blue collar whites, a constituency that the GOP has tried, and failed, to turn out for decades. His entry could draw enough more fiscally moderate, socially conservative voters out of the GOP fold, turning red states a little more purple and purple states blue.

Webb is a man of great character and unquestionable heroism. But conservatives considering casting their lot with him should be reminded that he was the 60th vote for Obamacare, and an advocate for providing Obamacare benefits to illegal aliens.
