Hillary Clinton has long been described as wooden, and that reputation is well earned. She has done nearly everything to overcome that perception. She once chugged a beer  to look blue collar. In New York, she pretended to be a Yankees fan. She’s sat down with Lena Dunham in a transparent attempt to appeal to youth who might prefer Bernie Sanders, and she’s attempted to appear lighthearted on SNL, falling on her face by most accounts.

But perhaps Hillary’s best known ploy is her strange, condescending adaption of a Southern accent when it suits her. She did it last time she ran, and it appears she’s back at it. As the Examiner reports:

The tactic drew chuckles, derision and not a little resentment when she tried it in 2007 and 2008. But she was back at it again in Alabama on Saturday, putting on a heavy twang to express her contempt for Republicans.

With Bernie Sanders narrowing her lead or overtaking her in early caucus and primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire, Clinton is hoping for a “Southern firewall,” and her itinerary of upcoming events reveals a determinatiion to set it ablaze quickly. She wants to win in South Carolina and then in the many Southern states holding primaries on “Super Tuesday,” where Sanders is polling much worse.

Hillary Clinton is a lot of things. To wit: a former First Lady, an incompetent Secretary of State, and a victim of her husband’s serial infidelity. She is not, however, a gifted politician.
