Joe Manchin’s Key Vote for Inflation Reduction Act Leads to Negative Consequences

Democratic Senator Joe Manchin’s vote to flip the script in favor of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has come with negative consequences for the Senator from West Virginia. The $370 billion in climate and clean energy investments included in the IRA is said to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by up to 43% below 2005 levels by 2030, although that information has yet to be proven. However, Manchin’s decision to support the bill has led to criticism from constituents in West Virginia, with his poll numbers plummeting after the vote as he may be attempting to make a right-wing or moderate shift against a massive spending bill.

Joe Manchin Expresses Concerns About IRA After Voting in Favor of It

Despite his vote in favor of the IRA, Joe Manchin has expressed concerns about the legislation’s impact, as Manchin is skeptical the legislation will be able to live up to its claims. During a recent Senate hearing, he expressed his concern about “scamming” the American people, despite the legislation including climate change handouts that he supported. Manchin’s opposition to the implementation of the law has led to threats of endorsing a repeal of the law that he negotiated and helped pass less than a year ago.

Popular Governor Jim Justice May Challenge Joe Manchin’s Seat in 2024

Republican Governor Jim Justice of West Virginia has taken note of the backlash against Manchin’s vote in favor of the IRA and is expected to challenge him for his Senate seat in 2024. Justice is one of the most popular governors in the country due to his stances against Joe Biden’s massive spending, and his candidacy could give Republicans one of their best opportunities to flip a Senate seat in a red state that heavily voted for Donald Trump in the past in deep-red West Virginia.

Joe Manchin’s Recent Actions Indicate a Shift to the Right

Joe Manchin’s recent actions have indicated a shift to the right or a more moderate approach, leading some to question whether he will run for reelection in 2024. He has been critical of the Biden administration’s climate policies, voted with Republicans to overturn key regulations, and blocked the confirmation of some of President Joe Biden’s top executive nominees.

His position as a swing vote in the Senate has given him tremendous sway over Biden’s ability to appoint nominees in a 51-49 Senate, with the margin for Democrats being even smaller with ailing Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) absent from Washington while she recovers from shingles and faces calls from many to retire.
