GOP Rep. Doug Collins to Run for Senate

Georgia Republican Doug Collins, one of President Trump’s staunchest defenders in Congress, is expected to announce a primary challenge to GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler.

Loeffler was recently appointed by Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.

Collins has, in contrast, made a name for himself as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee. He was Trump’s preferred choice to replace retiring Sen. Johnny Isakson. (Fox News)

Loeffler, a wealthy co-owner of the Atlanta Dream, a WNBA franchise, has said she would spend $20 million to retain her seat. But she will likely face a tough battle against the popular Collins.

The special election, set for November, will feature all candidates from both parties, with a January runoff if no one candidate secures a majority.

A split Republican vote increases the chances of a runoff. With a close battle for the majority in the Senate, that runoff could decide control of the 100-member body.

Loeffler has enthusiastically backed Trump since getting into office, potentially in an effort to assuage concerns among Republicans she is too moderate.
