California’s high tax, generous welfare state policies, and the dominance of progressive politics have combined to create an environment causing voters to leave the state at can only be described as an alarming rate.
For the first time since statehood in 1850, California is losing rather than gaining a congressional seat as a result of the decennial census and the ensuing reapportionment of the 435 districts in the U.S. House of Representatives among the 50 states. It’s an alarming reality for the state Ronald Reagan and his sunny optimistic brand of growth-oriented conservatism once called home.
The economy is in the doldrums, and not just because of the strict lockdowns instituted by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. Even with that, the state budget surplus for 2021 is projected to exceed $75 billion which, instead of being returned to the taxpayers through tax relief, is likely being socked away for the day when it’s needed to bail out the generous social welfare programs and government employee pensions the Democrats trade in exchange for votes to keep them in power.
“California used to be a place where everyone wanted to live, but now California has become a place where people want to leave,” Brandon Ristoff, a policy analyst with the California Policy Center told Center Square driven out by “bad policies on the economy, education and more.” State-to-state migration data recently released by the U.S. Department of Internal Revenue (IRS) shows a net loss of nearly 70,000 households plus – which works out to about 165,000 taxpayers and their dependents – between 2017 and 2018.
If that’s not bad enough, lawmakers in Sacramento now must worry about the impact of their departure on future budgets since they took nearly $9 billion in adjusted gross income with them when they left, The Epoch Times reported.
Like New York City, California working hard to drive its tax base out of the state. Longtime residents are retiring elsewhere. Younger voters are leaving to pursue job opportunities in other states. Major businesses are relocating. Too many people, especially those who make up the middle class, are adversely affected by the high cost of living there – especially the housing market which is soaring to unaffordability for so many people – are now finding the Golden State an impossible place to live.
Where are they going? Texas and Nevada – which have no state personal income tax, and Arizona – where the governor and members of the GOP-controlled state legislature are exploring ways to get rid of it.

-Texas experienced a net inflow of 72,306 taxpayers and their dependents, and a gross income boost of some $3.4 billion.

-Nevada welcomed 49,745 California taxpayers and their dependents, along with a gross income of $2.3 billion.

-Arizona saw an estimated 53,476 Californians relocated to Arizona, bringing with them around $2.2 billion in gross income.

Some policymakers still refuse to believe tax rates matter, that they have no incentive effect. Economist Arthur Laffer – developer of the famous “curve” that bears his name – proved they do. California has a state-local effective tax rate of 11.5 percent, the 8th highest in the nation in 2019 according to a recent Tax Foundation study. The effective state-local tax rate in Texas is 8 percent, in Nevada, it’s 9.7 percent, and in Arizona it’s 8.7 percent, making them (in order) 47th, 45th, and 29thout of 50.
A 2018 Cato Institute report also showed the relationship between state-local tax effective rates on out-of-state migration. Tax-related motivations could be inferred from the Census Bureau data, The Epoch Times reported, citing the think tanks’ observation that some of the questions asked of people choosing to relocate show the incentive effect at work.
“The Census Bureau does not ask movers about taxes. But some of the 19 choices may reflect the influence of taxes. For example, people moving for housing reasons may consider the level of property taxes since those taxes are a standard item listed on housing sale notices. Similarly, people moving for new jobs may consider the effect of income taxes if they are, for example, moving between a high-tax state such as California and a state with no income tax such as Nevada,” CATO said.
If California doesn’t change its ways soon, it may find it has taxed its way into default. Illinois and New Jersey are in similar straights. There’s a lesson here for Democrats and Republicans in Washington who, despite the apparent end of the pandemic, still spend like there’s no tomorrow. If they continue to do that, there won’t be.

  1. I wouldn’t live there if you paid me – and you’d have to pay me a lot because it’s way to expensive for me to afford!

  2. Here is what I don’t understand about it. The same people who flee California go to states like Arizona and Nevada and then immediately start electing Democrats there. What do they think is going to happen but that the Democrats are going to create the same garbage that they fled.

I am not a conspiracy theorist normally, but I am honestly beginning to wonder if this isn’t just the case Of rich people looking to spread liberal progressive filth throughout all 50 states by attrition. I still can’t believe that Arizona has two democrat senators. How did that happen? It happened because people fled California into Arizona.

    1. There was an excellent article on that very topic, entitled “The Liberal-Corporate Complex”. The author accurately described how large corporations cull competitors by installing liberal public officials who legislate costly, punitive regulations, policies and worker benefits (Such as Minimum Wages) that degrade the profit margins of start ups and struggling firms.

      1. From the Blockchain QVS voting System which the Military did the count of, California went Red. Dont believe Media lies, Californians love President Trump. Pedophiles love Biden

        1. If you mean the election was a coup, we’re aware of that. I’ll paraphrase a line from “All About Eve”, “Fasten your seat belts , it’s going to be a bumpy four years”.

    2. No! it happen because of fraudulent ballots. I bet if Arizona check on the two Democrats that won they probably find out they didn’t get the votes.

  3. AND, on July 1st, the state is INCREASING the highest in the nation gas tax by an additional 7 cents a gallon, making 1/3rd of every gallon TAX!

    1. Maybe their line of thinking is, if we raise the gas tax high enough, people won’t be able to afford the gas to drive out. LOL Seriously, revenue in a Welfare/Sanctuary State has to come from somewhere. I’m sure the majority of gas tax revenue doesn’t make it to roads/highway maintenance as it’s infrastructure.

  4. The Golden Plated State has lost much of its luster after decades of liberal involvement in our cultures, government offices and media campaigns to make everyone ‘equal’. The funny thing is, Churchill PREDICTED what happened to the Golden Calf…uhhh…State with an article he wrote about Bolsheviks–virtually word for word. His prescient observations designated a certain group people who imposed oppression over those hapless Russians, also word for word…..

  5. It’s my home state and I moved years ago because they will do everything they can to steal from the taxpayers that are employed. Undocumented pay nothing so their you have it. Stupid Newscum and his devilish ways. I have family there and they’re finding it so difficult to live there. I would never move back there unless they get rid of the undocumented people and the high taxes.

  6. I do not understand liberals at all. They actually believe that democrats are really for the people, when all democrats really care about is having total control over the people. The democrats are the party of the KKK and today they just enslave a different way. When will liberals wake up?

  7. Anyone with brains, testicular fortitude and minimum tolerance for risk will now get the hell outa Dodge. And this mass exodus has been going on for a loooong time. We are in our Metro area chock full of economic refugees from Kalifornia-stan. I only hope they have the brains to leave behind the BLUE voting habits that destroyed the state they left.

  8. Almost half of all US counties are 2nd Amendment Sanctuaries, as are many cities and a number of entire states as well. People who can see the next “shot heard ’round the world” coming are preparing, and for many this includes moving out of enemy controlled territory, where anti free market / anti capitalist / punitively high tax rates are the rule and not the exception. People are buying guns and ammo at record setting rates, and sales for all sorts of survival tools and supplies are breaking records as well. “Prepping”, as in preparing for societal break down, is more widespread and commonly embraced than ever.

  9. Anyone that thinks taxes (property, sales, income, etc.) is not a disincentive for remaining in a state is a moron. I made the decision to relocate to Indiana because of their lower taxes, especially the low property taxes. I would be paying 3-4 times the annual property tax on my home and land in the state I moved from. I am able to enjoy these lower tax rates because the residents of Indiana are for the most part self-reliant, hard working, responsible citizens that do not expect or want the city, county, and state governments to provide for their support. We realize that there are strings attached to any and all forms of government support and these “strings” usually limit personal freedoms in the long run and also transfer personal wealth out of the hands of the individual for the express purpose of growing government and its control.

Please, if you move out of California, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Oregon, Washington or any other God forsaken Democrat communist controlled state to escape high taxes, ineffective law enforcement, high crime, corrupt unions, exorbitant housing costs, poor schools that no longer teach academics but are nothing more than propaganda mills for social justice, critical race theory, and perverted sex education curriculums; then leave your failed liberal, progressive, communist ideologies back in the states you are leaving and embrace the conservative principles of the new state you are fleeing to; don’t be a dog who returns to its vomit. If you are fleeing a Democommie controlled state then don’t vote for them in your new state or you will end up with the same results you fled from. The definition of insanity is to repeat the same mistake over and over again expecting a positive outcome.

  10. All you Californians who mover to Nevada find another state, your a mess and we don’t want you and your politics!

  11. Californians come to another state like Nevada housing prices go sky high like they did in the 90’s caused a lot of trouble for Nevadans trying to buy homes they priced us right out of the market, go back where you belong you voted for this schmuck newsom clean up your own mess! Go home demonRats you’ll never fit in here, we like our guns and our state despite the gov that’s toast anyway , come election time all dems are toast, we are a RED State and proud of it!

  12. That is the plan! Newsome is in the hands and pocket of the Chinese Communist Party. Their plan is to remove Americans and replace them with foreigners who will do thier bidding, to destroy the State ready for a Chinese Takeover

  13. As California is, so goes the nation….

With all the moving, those people, as others have noted, will be voting for condemned-o-crats in the other cities, counties, and states. Evil just can’t seem to turn away from evil, and that is what the condemned-o-crats are pushing. An evil rule of our nation and world.

We MUST be strong and courageous. And, remember, soon and very soon, we will all stand before The Creator…. Are you ready? Make sure you are ready – could happen to you today!

  14. My wife’s job is moving from out of state to the L.A. area. They offered 15% salary compensation as incentive. We did a quick study and the delta is more like 30% cost of living — and then you are stuck in a mass of humanity pocked with festering boils (see Venice Beach). Yeah the weather is nice but there is nice weather in a lot of places. No thanks.

  15. Tell them NOT to come to Texas if they’re bringing their liberal ideas here. We don’t want them.

  16. the problem is these CA immigrants are bring the policies, or the culture, with them to the states they are migrating too. Seems these idiots would have learned but I bet they continue to vote dems in. How sad
