Eight people have reportedly been killed after a mass shooting at a San Jose railyard in California on Wednesday.
As USA Today reports:
SAN JOSE, California – A gunman opened fire at a light rail yard Wednesday, killing at least eight people in the latest deadly shooting rampage to rock the nation in recent weeks.
Police spokesman Russell Davis said the gunman, an employee at the rail yard, was also dead and that other employees were among the victims. Davis said he did not know how the gunman died, nor whether law enforcement fired their weapons.
Mayor Sam Liccardo said the situation at the sprawling Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) light rail hub was still being assessed. He said the city was facing a “dark moment.”
“This is a horrific day for our city and tragic day for the VTA family,” he said. “Our heart pains for the families and the coworkers.”
The shooting is the most recent example of the wave of shootings, murder, and crime that have swept over the United States in the year since the death of George Floyd, and subsequent riots in May of 2020.
