Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden reemerged to give campaign finance attorney Dan Backer and others an answer as to whether or not he supports nationwide calls to defund the police.

It’s unclear if Biden’s rebuke to his base’s pleas will dampen their enthusiasm, affecting voter turnout in swing states as it did with Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Progressive blogs like Mother Jones conveyed the left-wing consensus which involved balancing two impulses: their disappointment at the “moderate” Biden and their visceral hatred of President Trump. There was some cautious optimism that the latest police controversies had shifted the range of ideas acceptable in the public discourse, otherwise known as the Overton window.

The good news for President Trump is that calls to “defund the police” poll poorly. As YouGov explains:

Despite calls by activists and protesters to defund police departments, most Americans do not support reducing law enforcement budgets. Close to two-thirds (65%) oppose cutting police force funding. Just 16 percent of Democrats and 15 percent of Republicans support that idea.

Biden instead continues to try appeasing leftists with half-measures that could alienate both urban progressives and moderate suburbanites.

Biden offered a cursory explanation of his new stance in an interview with CBS’s Norah O’Donnell later reported by the Washington Times:

“No, I don’t support defunding the police,” Mr. Biden told CBS News. “I support conditioning federal aid to police, based on whether or not they meet certain basic standards of decency and honorableness and, in fact, are able to demonstrate that they can protect the community and everybody in the community.”

One of Biden’s vice-presidential frontrunners, former Orlando Chief of Police-turned-Congresswoman, Val Demings (D-FL), referred to the Minneapolis City Council’s veto-proof vote to dissolve the police as “thoughtful.” Her “evolving” stance conflicts with earlier reporting from The Atlantic, citing the Orlando Police Department as having “a long record of excessive-force allegations, and a lack of transparency on the subject, dating back at least as far as Demings’s time as chief.”

WATCH:

Deming’s pandering came despite Minneapolis City Council President Lisa Bender’s admission to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that she didn’t know who would respond to violent criminal activity if Minnesota’s largest city abolished its police force.

At least she was being honest, I suppose. And somehow that response was an improvement from earlier on Monday when Bender suggested that dialing 9-1-1 was a form of privilege.

    2. This is nothing more than a call by the LEFT for revolution. You see, just like the muslims, who believe that when they are able to take a 5% control of the population, they ARE in control, so the left actually believe they are in control now. WHY? They believe just like muslims, that their VIOLENCE is enough to silence all others. When will it end? When God is invited back into our nation OR when He returns in judgement.
Folks, the end is near. The Antichrist will soon appear. Your only hope is to turn back to Jesus Christ and give your hearts to God. Then claim John 14:1-3

  1. There are so many issues like “defunding the police” the Republicans will have trouble
deciding which one(s) to use. Open boarders, the New Green Deal, and locking down the economy offer such opportunities, but if all are used, they run the risk of seeming to piling
on the mentally handicapped. If Trump does not win in a landslide, our nation will be in
serious trouble from the fact that there is even a small minority who think these ideas have merit. Can the Democrats be that far out of touch with reality?

    1. Yes they are. Democrats now think that cheering for virus numbers and more people out of work while slipping mega Millions to illegals and supporting violence is the new way to win elections!

    2. Not out of touch. Just planning to steal the election with massive election fraud. And yes, the RINOs are worthless as they refuse to do anything about it. They serve the same masters, ONE WORLD ORDER.
Turn back to God in obedience to II Chronicles 7:14 OR face slavery.

  2. Joe Biden is try to talk out of both sides of his mouth when he only has 1/2 a brain. “NO” he says to “defunding” the police, but yes he says to “reconditioning the police’. Does he mean less police for more cost, more examinations for the police to be employed, does he mean “just less police for more crime”. “you pays your money and takes your choice”. Well that is not how the state. or the cities. or the towns of the United States can be operated.

  3. Joe Biden is doing what he does best…PANDERING….Biden doesn’t really stand for anything but re-election….he says whatever is necessary to get re-elected. This is understandable since Biden’s entire family has become wealthy from his political career…..Joe Biden…FOR SALE to the highest bidder…..

  4. Joe Biden is a PANDERER who says whatever is necessary to be elected. It’s understandable since his entire extended family has gotten wealthy from his political career….

  5. almost 50 yrs in public office and even vice prez to obozo and what has he done positive for the people of this country let alone the blacks in this country , absolutely nothing . trump2020-2024

  6. “Calling the police in the middle of the night comes from a place of privilege”… seriously!..? How about this, break into my house in the middle of the night and YES, it will my “privilege” to show you how deeply I feel about the second amendment.
I promise to make it painless and quick!
The call to defund police departments is psychotic and will end with everyday citizens enforcing common sense law with big cities that embrace this knee jerk crap becoming bigger shart holes than they already are.

  7. The corrupt Leftist Democrat Establishment Elite support LawLess Rioters, Looters, and killers,
    not Law & Order.
Defunding Police will only create Anarchy.

  8. BDS: Biden Derangement Syndrome or Devotion Syndrome can explain Biden.
or DDS: Democrat Derangement Syndrome explains Dem actions since 2016

  9. The Democrats are going to have a hard time denying that
“defund the police” is not coming out of their precincts. This
will be an albatross hung around the necks of their candidates
up and down the ballot this November. It is a clear example
of their tone deafness and lack of understanding of the people
they hope to rule over (which is another flaw of their Party.)

  10. Joe Biden could not string together a sentence that stated, “I do not support defunding the police.” Joe has a maximum of four words. All he could manage was, “I do not support.”
