Maryland’s Republican Governor Larry Hogan, Jr., who publicly called for an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, called Congress’ handling of Trump’s impeachment “a sham and a joke” after it ended in the President’s acquittal.

One of the most liberal Republican officials in America, Hogan has often been at odds with the Trump administration.

Speaking at POLITCO’s 10th annual State Solutions conference, Hogan attacked both the Democrats and Republicans for leading a House inquiry and Senate trial in which both chambers made up their minds ahead of time.

“I thought the Democrats in the House had already decided before the hearings that the president should be impeached and I didn’t think it was going to be fair and objective,” said Hogan, adding that Republicans in the Senate also decided to acquit Trump “no matter what the facts were.”

“I don’t think Congress did their job. But the American people will, and I have more faith in the American people to make that decision in November, and that’s what they’re going to get to do,” said Hogan.

Hogan has publicly criticized Trump’s phone call to Ukraine’s president in which he asked for an announcement that former Vice President Joe Biden was being investigated for corruption, saying the matter should be investigated.

He wanted Republican senators to call new witnesses to testify to what they heard regarding Trump’s call.  Hogan says the lack of witnesses in the Senate trial meant “the whole process was kind of a sham and a joke.”

It’s not the first time the Hogan family has crossed a Republican president on impeachment.  Hogan’s father, Maryland Congressman Larry Hogan, Sr., was the first Republican member of Congress to call for President Richard Nixon’s impeachment.
