MSNBC’s Chris Matthews Abruptly Resigns

MSNBC host Chris Matthews announced his abrupt retirement on last night’s Hardball after hosting the iconic news program for more than two decades.

The announcement came in Matthews’ opening monologue, where the 74-year-old pundit admitted to flirting with female colleagues in a way that embarrassed and even humiliated, many of them. (TPM)

“After conversation with NBC, I decided tonight will be my last ‘Hardball,'” Matthews said at the beginning of the program.

The host explained that younger generations, who are “improving the work place,” are “ready to take the reins.”

“We’re talking here about better standards than what we grew up with, fairer standards,” Matthews said. “A lot of it has to do with how we talk to each other.”

“Compliments on a woman’s appearance that some men, including me, might have once incorrectly thought were okay were never okay,” he continued. “Not then and certainly not today, and for making such comments in the past, I’m sorry.”

Matthews’ apology came a few days after freelance journalist Laura Basset accused him of making misogynistic comments minutes before Matthews interviewed her about President Trump’s alleged sexual assaults.

Basset’s essay, published in GQ, included other demeaning remarks allegedly made by Matthews over his career.

During a commercial break, Matthews unceremoniously left the studio. MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki hosted the remainder of the episode.

Ten days ago, Matthews faced withering criticism from progressives for comparing Bernie Sanders’ Nevada victory to the fall of France in 1940.

Days later, the classically liberal host sparred with Sen. Elizabeth Warren in an interview some critics decried as sexist.

In late 2016, off-air footage caught Matthews jokingly asking for a “Bill Cosby pill” before interviewing Hillary Clinton.

  1. Does he (anybody) think that giving a woman a compliment is an act of misogyny, ever?
I think he is guilty of more than this and is trying to take all mankind down with him. What
    a sorry sack!

  2. Well, we’ll, well. So old Chris got caught in the liberal trick bag. He should have seen it coming..after all, he as misogynistic as every other misogynist he’s labeled over the years. Bet he lost that tingle that ran up his leg a few years back. Hope the door hits him in the a** on the way out. Good riddance.

  3. what is “misogynistic” about complimenting a lady? is it also “misogynistic” when the compliment comes from another lady, or from a lady to a man? just when i thought i understood double standards now there’s a triple or more variation?!

  4. I do not know who Mathews is except from what is on the internet , but according to what I read he is only human, and every human makes mistakes, now Mr Mathews apparently did the correct thing in his mind, it is to bad that some in the Trump Administration including Trump does not do the same thing.
